FEATURING LIESL SHURTLIFF OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER
of the (Fairly) True Tales series and the Time Castaways series. When she writes, Liesl likes to wonder back to her childhood and gather the magic that still remains so she can share it with children everywhere. Books in her (Fairly) True series have been named to over two dozen state award lists, including being an Illinois Read’s selection, and have won a Children’s Book Award from the International Literacy Association.
A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Liesl has called Chicago home for fifteen years. She and her husband have four children who have inspired many characters in Liesl’s books, both hero and villain.
HONORING JACQUI SANDERS, PH.D.
At this year’s gala, we will be honoring Jacqui Sanders, who started working at the O-School in 1952 as a dormitory counselor and later became assistant principal, a position she held until 1965. In 1972, she returned to the O-School as the director, serving in this role until 1992. In addition to her work at the O-School, Jacqui also held appointments at the University of Chicago’s departments of Education and Psychiatry and was president of the American Association of Children’s Residential Treatment Centers. In her book, A Greenhouse for The Mind, Jacqui used her long career working with children with social-emotional needs to highlight the importance of social emotional learning in classrooms long before its place was recognized in modern education.
