ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY

A supportive and structured day camp for young people (ages 8-14) who require additional supports to access the joys of summer camp.

August 1-12, 2022
9 AM – 3 PM

Location: The O-School at 6245 S. Ingleside Ave. in Chicago.

MISSION

Camp O thoughtfully embeds social and emotional learning into camp activities.

A low staff to camper ratio (1:4) allows for increased interaction and supervision with highly qualified and trained staff members.

With counselor support, campers will experience activities, such as:

  • Water Day
  • Team Sports
  • Dance + Music
  • STEM
  • Talent Show
  • Camp Olympics
  • BBQs
  • Arts + Crafts

Campers will partake in joy and silliness, discover new interests, make friends, build confidence, and help create a dynamic Camp O community!

CAMPER PROFILE

Camp O campers are both interested (they have lots of passions and a desire to engage socially) and interesting (they are bright, kind, funny, and unique!). In addition to their strengths, Camp O campers sometimes struggle to exhibit flexibility, try something new, respond to change, solve social problems, or form healthy friendships.

Camp O campers have a lot to give but need help navigating the complexities of a new social setting – like summer camp!

  • Camp O campers may have formal diagnoses such as:
  • autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • social communication disorder
  • anxiety disorders
  • learning disabilities
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD)
  • Some campers may not have a formal diagnosis but may exhibit characteristics consistent with these diagnoses.

Campers must be able to maintain safe behavior and remain in their groups without continuous 1:1 supervision.

EXPERTISE

Camp O was thoughtfully developed by a team of staff members at the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School (the O-School).

The O-School is a therapeutic day school with over a century of experience serving students with significant mental health and emotional challenges and those on the autism spectrum.

The Camp O Leadership Team has a combined experience of 25 years at the O-School and includes a licensed and certified speech language pathologist.
